Leicester is a city of 290,000 people, located in the East Midlands area of the United Kingdom, and is distinguished by being the county town of Leicestershire. The city of Leicester is one of the most cosmopolitan areas of the United Kingdom, with immigrant groups from a wide variety of countries and creeds making up approximately forty percent of the population of the city.

The United Kingdom is well known around the world as being a welcoming country for people from other lands who, for whatever reason, come to this country because they would like to start a new life in a new environment. This is partly due to the existence of the British Empire which began to encompass other countries from the sixteenth century. The British Empire spanned the globe and grew out of the trading posts in other lands that were established by British merchants and military seafarers in mediaeval times.

Even before the sixteenth century there was immigration to Leicester, and by the thirteenth century the town already had a large Jewish community who contributed to the commercial heath of the town by creating businesses, trade and employment. This is something that has been seen in most parts of the United Kingdom and indeed in many countries across the world.

World War Two caused tremendous upheavals across the world, and one of the outcomes of this was a wave of people emigrating to Leicester. People started settling in the city at this time from a wide variety of cultures and countries across the globe, including Ireland Poland, India and Pakistan. They put down roots and started communities that survived and continue to thrive to this day.

There is a Polish community in Leicester which had its origins from world war two, when there were many soldiers from Poland serving alongside British troops in the United Kingdom. At the successful end of the war many servicemen who were posted in England from other friendly countries went home, and were welcomed by the people of their home country. But the communist regime in Poland stopped the Polish servicemen from returning to a warm welcome in their homeland, so they settled in Leicester and started a Polish community in the city.

In recent years there has been a further influx of people from Eastern Europe to settle in Leicester, which is something that the city has in common with many other towns and cities across the United Kingdom. Many of these people from Eastern Europe work in factories, shops, pubs, clubs and bars. They also work at skilled trades such as shop fitting, construction, plumbing and electrics.

Leicester attracted many migrants from the Irish Republic after the war, when hard times and poverty triggered what they call economic migration from Ireland to countries like England, Canada and the United States of America. Today there is a thriving Irish community in the city.

Immigrants from the India started to arrive in Leicester during the 1960s. Asians started to settle in Leicester during the 1970s when Asians were being expelled from the African countries of Kenya and Uganda.
